Police go after fine violators

PHILIPSBURG--The Prosecutor’s Office and the Police Force have issued a stern warning to all those who have outstanding fines to pay them immediately or face jail time. During upcoming traffic controls, police will be checking a list for persons who have unpaid fines. These fines will have to be settled before those persons are allowed to continue.

The police said in a statement on Thursday, “If someone who has outstanding fines intends to leave the island via Princess Juliana International Airport SXM or the seaport and their passport is scanned at the Immigration booth, it will also register that they have outstanding fines.

“These fines will have to be settled before that person leaves the island. Fines can also be paid at the Receiver’s Office located on Soualiga Boulevard and at police headquarters in Philipsburg. There is a swipe machine for a valid bankcard or credit card at the mentioned locations. This can be done at any time during the day. Someone refusing to pay their fine could result in that person spending time in jail.”

The police have collected NAf. 8,000 in outstanding fines for the month of January.

General controls at different locations on the island will continue. The community is advised to walk with proper identification at all times. All drivers should make sure to have their valid drivers’ licences while operating a motor vehicle, also that the vehicle they are driving be in good working condition and all documentation for the vehicle is up to date and on hand in the vehicle. This information is to prevent any unnecessary inconvenience in case they are stopped during a control by police.
