6:00 AM FRIDAY, JULY 31ST…  

 

WEATHER:     

This afternoon through Friday midday: Partly cloudy to cloudy and breezy with light haze, isolated showers and a chance of isolated thunderstorms.   

Forecast High: 31°C / 88°F             Forecast Low: 25°C / 77°F

SURFACE WINDS:  This afternoon through Friday midday: Southeast to east with a moderate to fresh breeze of 13 to 23 mph and occasional higher gusts.  

   

SYNOPSIS:    

Available moisture and instability in the wake of tropical storm Isaias will cause cloudy periods, isolated showers and possible thunderstorms across the local area. Residents and users of areas prone to flooding should continue to be vigilant.  

Sea are subsiding but expected to peak near 10 feet. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise extreme caution.  

 

 STATE OF THE SEA: Moderate to rough       WAVES/SWELLS: 7 to 10 feet  

   

SPECIAL FEATURE:  At 11:00 AM (15:00 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Isaias was located near latitude 18.1 North, longitude 68.9 West or about 380 miles west of St. Maarten. The system is moving toward the northwest (away from St. Maarten) near 20 mph (31 km/h). A west northwest to northwest motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected over the next few days. On this forecast track, the center of Isaias will move over Hispaniola today. Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts.  

A broad area of low pressure located a few hundred miles south-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands have become more concentrated this morning.  Some development of this system is possible during the next day or two before environmental conditions become unfavorable.

* Formation chance through 5 days...low...20 percent.  

 

The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten will continue to monitor the progress of these systems and keep the public updated accordingly.  

 

OUTLOOK through Saturday midday: Partly cloudy and breezy with isolated showers possible.
