St. Maarten Scouts at the 2018 Beach Clean-Up.
PHILIPSBURG--With the start of the new year, organisers of the St. Maarten Regatta are already in full preparation for the seventh annual Beach Clean-Up. The St. Maarten Regatta Beach Clean-Up will take place at Kim Sha Beach on Saturday, January 26, from 9:00am to 12:30pm.
Together with the local youth, the Regatta Foundation will start the morning with cleaning Kim Sha Beach, followed by various sport activities. The children will be classified in one of the two age categories: 6-12 years and 13-18 years.
The teams will have 30 minutes to compete against each other and collect the most waste possible. St. Maarten Nature Foundation will hold a quiz after the beach clean-up to make the children more aware of the negative effects of pollution on marine life and environment. The last part of the morning will be filled with various games organised by LAB Sport Academy.
Domino’s Pizza will provide everyone with a delicious pizza at the end of the day.
Anouk van Loon, organiser of the beach clean-up, said she is excited to see the amount of waste being collected.
“This beach clean-up is a combination of education and fun. Children become more aware of the effects that pollution has on the island and rest of the world. This beach clean-up is an event where you, together with your friends, can help the island and have fun as well,” she said.
This clean-up also counts towards achieving community hours.
There will be prizes available for the best cleaners, the winners of the quiz and the winners of the sports activities,” stated the coordinator.
This year’s beach clean-up is sponsored by LAB Sports Academy, Nature Foundation, Tri-Sport, Funtopia, The Scuba Shop, Intertoys, Ocean Explorers, Random Wind, Fiji Water, Domino’s, Shipwreck Shop, Rainforest Adventures, Timeless Spirits, Meadowlands, Carrefour, Seaside Nature Park, Carousel, and Print & Sign Express.
