PHILIPSBURG--Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Wescot-Williams will add another milestone to her long list of firsts today, Tuesday, when she becomes the first MP to defend an initiative law in the legislature.
Before the Central Committee of Parliament will be the draft initiative ordinance establishing a Timeshare Authority and another to establish rules for timeshare. Both laws are in English and were originally brought forward by former MP Leroy de Weever, also of the Democratic Party. The drafts have undergone several changes and updates prior to reaching Parliament.
Wescot-Williams will face questions and queries from her colleague MPs on the ordinance in the public meeting set to start at 10:00am in Parliament House.
“This is the first time an MP will be defending a law … I will sort of be sitting in the seat of government,” said the MP, explaining how different the scene will be in Parliament today. Usually, members of the Council of Ministers would be the ones before Parliament defending laws and policies and fielding questions.
Also on the agenda for today is the draft initiative ordinance amending the Ordinance on Admittance and Expulsion, in connection with the non-refund of fees based on Article 41 of the Regulation.
