MARIGOT--The Soroptimist Club of St. Martin will be reflecting today, as usual, on the situation of women and girls, the elderly, their rights and the struggle that remains to be fought, during International Women’s Day.

“This is a constant struggle in all public and private spheres and from the earliest childhood,” the club said in a statement, adding that it was “a singular year that takes on a particular connotation with the impact of COVID-19 on women’s employment, aggravating their precariousness and reinforcing inequalities between men and women, as well as the increased risk to physical and psychological security by confinement at home.

“However, there is a mobilisation of women health professionals on the front line, often to the detriment of their own lives. On a broader level, the pandemic highlighted the effectiveness of women’s leadership in their commitment and determination in managing the crisis (Denmark, Ethiopia, Finland, etcetera).”

It said the role of women in the post-COVID period in nurturing talent, developing creativity and the desire to build themselves and move forward is very important as a breeding ground for leadership development.

“The world will no longer be the same after the COVID. We must ensure that it is better through our commitment on a small scale, certainly for a fairer, more egalitarian society, by being women in the service of women.”

To carry out its actions to improve conditions of women and girls in the community, the St. Martin Soroptimist Club will organise a raffle of a painting entitled “Space”, generously donated by the artist KIRL. The Club thanked the artist for his support of Soroptimist projects.
