PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten students who are pursuing tertiary studies in Tallahassee, Florida, were not affected by Hurricane Michael which pummelled that state as a powerful storm on Wednesday, October 10.
Education Minister Wycliffe Smith said on Wednesday the majority of students returned to school on Monday, October 15. He said all schools where St. Maarten students are attending in Tallahassee have since reopened.
Reports reaching the minister indicate that damages from the hurricane were minimal and electricity has already been restored to a majority of those affected.
He thanked the staff of the Education Ministry’s Division of Study Financing and his staff for their dedication in keeping track of students during the hurricane. He also thanked Tallahassee St. Maarten Foundation and city officials of Tallahassee.
He said while he is grateful that local students fared well, he is mindful of those who suffered greater losses and are still struggling post Hurricane Michael and those who were affected in Florida and other US states.
