PHILIPSBURG--A number of businesses have received “stern warnings” from the Economic Control Inspectors for various infractions, including price-gouging, non-placement of prices on items stacked on shelves and refusing to provide a receipt.
The law dictates that if these practices are found, the business will get a stern warning and must correct the violations on the spot. Repeat offenders will be heavily fined by inspectors.
Supermarkets, tire repair shops, hardware stores and general stores are controlled by the inspectors. The Department has kept a keen on businesses in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
“Many people used social media and the official Government link to report price-gouging. We appreciate these community efforts to promote fairness and stop illegal pricing of items in the country. Please remain vigilant and keep reporting,” Economic Affairs Minister Mellissa Arrindell-Doncher said in a press statement.
To lodge a complaint against a business selling listed goods for more than the established maximum price, submit a copy of the receipt/invoice, your name and contact information to the Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunication (TEATT) Inspectorate in the Yellow Building at Tamarindesteeg 16 or e-mail
