PHILIPSBURG--United People’s (UP) party leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Theodore Heyliger wants more information from Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI Christophe Emmanuel about the sixty solar-panelled bus shelters. Emmanuel announced this week that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) had been signed with Adopt-A-Stop SXM who will create these shelters.
“All very interesting, but what is going to happen to the local company Lime Lite Media that owns the present bus stops? I do hope that it's a joint venture,” said Heyliger. Emmanuel stated that the bus shelters will be placed in strategic locations throughout the island.
The project is expected to commence in the third quarter of this year.
“Some time ago, I also questioned Government policy on the use of solar energy. Presently, GEBE does not allow the meters to spin backwards. So what is the policy with this new company that’s installing these solar-powered bus stops?” asked Heyliger on Thursday.
He also wants to know whether a new policy has been created just for the new company or will the entire community also have an opportunity to create solar energy and have the meters turn back. He hopes to get clarity from Emmanuel, who did not give details about the MOU signed with the company.
