Terry Jones

PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) announced on Monday that Terry Jones, the founder of travel website Travelocity, is to be one of the keynote speakers at the St. Maarten Innovations, Initiatives and Industries Link-up Event (SMILE).

Travelocity is one of the world’s largest travel sites. After building the digital multinational travel site, Jones became an investor in tourism start-ups. Additionally, he holds several patents.

Jones has lectured around the world on innovation and building digital relationships in business in more than 25 countries. His programmes on innovation, leadership and customer relationships are known to be thought-provoking, entertaining and personal, providing both ideas and concrete action items on a path to implementation, said SHTA in a press release.

SMILE’s organisers said they are elated to have Jones participate in SMILE. They also said they hope his speech will be an inspiration to St. Maarten’s recovering tourism industry, as well as to entrepreneurs attending SMILE.

Jones will also visit various St. Maarten educational institutions to share insights and to answer questions on the world of tourism and digital innovation, said the organisers.

Waste2Work is hosting a design competition to uncover talent in St. Maarten and raise awareness on reusing waste materials. Top designs will be showcased at SMILE and three of the best creative and innovative designs made from reusable waste materials will be awarded a prize. This contest is running until October 15, as part of the build-up to SMILE, said organisers on Monday.
