Witnesses being heard in toddler accident case

RETREAT ESTATE--Witnesses are being heard in the case involving a two-year-old toddler who was run over by a white Kia Picanto that was driven into a group of persons outside a house on Passion Fruit Road in Retreat Estate around 10:20am Sunday.

Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Hazel Durand said on Tuesday that the two suspects in the case are still incarcerated and the investigation into the case is still ongoing.

The child died on the spot after the incident and three persons were transported to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for injuries sustained.

Police spokesperson Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson said in a press release issued after the incident on Sunday that officers investigating the incident had learnt that the driver of a small white private vehicle had driven the vehicle into a group of young men who were at the entrance of a home. Included in this group was the toddler, who Henson said was approximately three years old.

“As a result of the action by the driver of the small white vehicle, the toddler died of the injuries he sustained and three other persons were taken to St. Maarten Medical Center to be treated for injuries they sustained,” Henson said in his release. He said the case was being treated as a criminal investigation.
