NASSAU, The Bahamas--Director General Latia Duncombe of The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation represented The Bahamas at the 1st Regional Conference on Women's Empowerment in Tourism for Latin America and the Caribbean, in Asunción, Paraguay, on October 21 and 22. Organised by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Paraguay’s National Secretariat of Tourism SENATUR, the event brought together regional leaders to advance discussions on women’s empowerment in the tourism industry, according to a press release from The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.
Duncombe participated in multiple sessions, including the High-Level Panel titled "Women’s Leadership in Tourism: Highlighting Achievements and Recognising the Challenges of Women Leaders in the Tourism Sector". Across these sessions, she highlighted the achievements of women in leadership and addressed the barriers women face in climbing the professional ranks within the tourism industry.
The conference agenda also covered key topics, including women’s entrepreneurial roles in tourism and the opportunities for tourism-related micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the global market. These discussions are essential to addressing economic empowerment, access to financing, training and leadership opportunities for women in tourism, the release states.
“Empowering women across the region is key to unlocking the full potential of our tourism sector and ensuring its long-term sustainability,” said Duncombe. “This conference provides a platform to address these barriers and drive meaningful change, ensuring women have a larger role in shaping the future of tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
Duncombe’s participation not only showcased The Bahamas' leadership in promoting inclusive tourism practices but also reinforced its commitment to creating sustainable opportunities for women at every level of the industry, both regionally and globally, the release concludes.
