SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic--Vice President Raquel Peña toured the expanded Joseph Industrial Development Corporation Shipyard and Dock on November 12. The facility is located at Prolongación Juan Goico Alix, off Ensanche Ozama of eastern Santo Domingo.

Company director José Ignacio Acero Ruiz explained the facility has new power pumps. The entrance channel was dredged to 20 feet, and new equipment was installed to increase the shipyard’s capacity to repair four vessels at a time.

Joseph Industrial Development Corporation Shipyard and Dock is a complete shipyard. Its installations include a 152.4 metre (m) by 17.37m dry dock and another of 91m by 17.37m. It has 130m of docking space. Its services include: sandblast and paint, mechanical and machine shops, steel and pipe repairs, electrical repairs, tank cleaning and audio gauging.

Acero Ruiz described the shipyard as the most modern in the region. He says 200 people are employed directly, but they expect this to increase to 1,500 jobs in the future.

He assures that the industry is capable of repairing ships and building them, with a high added value to the economy. He says the company is competitive with any dock in the region. “Our shipyard has a strategic location, in the centre of the Caribbean.” He explained the investment was made to service the more than 100,000 boats annually passing by the island. ~ DR1 ~
