BASSE-TERRE, Guadeloupe--The first “Caribbean family” textbook is being launched across the region this summer as an educational resource that has been specifically designed for primary school children, filling a crucial gap in the representation of Caribbean culture and Creole identity, according to a press release from Caribbean Media Partners.

For over 30 years, Lynda Francisque, a dedicated mother of three and proud Caribbean native, has cherished her Caribbean heritage, yet she has never encountered a textbook that truly represents and celebrates Caribbean culture. Her 10-year-old son Miles shares her longing for such a resource, which led to the creation of the “My Caribbean family” textbook. The project aims to provide children with an educational tool that connects them to their roots and instils a deep sense of cultural pride, the release states.

The essence of “My Caribbean family” lies in fostering knowledge, positive representation, cultural empowerment, self-confidence and unity. These values are essential for nurturing committed citizens who will lead the Caribbean into a brighter future. The bilingual publication, featuring Creole expressions, ensures accessibility and inclusivity for young learners.

Francisque passionately explains that the “My Caribbean family” textbook is more than just an educational resource. “It is a celebration of our shared DNA, history, environment, habits and appearances. It emphasises the richness of our common heritage while honouring the diversity within our family. By claiming ownership of this valuable legacy, we can equip the next generation to face future challenges together, from biodiversity preservation to tackling the Sargassum invasion.”

The first edition of the "My Caribbean family” textbook is set to reach children in Guadeloupe, Dominica, Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & The Grenadines and Barbados. The textbook will be available through mainstream distribution channels, making it easily accessible to families and educators across the region.
