CAY HILL--Laticia Brown played in two of the three finals of the first Pineapple Pete Open Doubles Tournament at the Raoul Illidge Tennis Complex Friday. She was on the winning team in both matches.
Brown teamed up with Sylvia Jongbloed in the Women’s Double. They faced and beat Erika van der Horst and Katja Andeweg: 6-2 6-3.
In the Mixed Doubles Brown joined Daniel Dario. They faced Hans and Suzan de Bruyne and won 6-1 6-4.
“There is no argument that Laticia Brown is a force to be reckoned with, participating in and winning two finals on the same night,” said Peter Swart of the St. Maarten Tennis Club that organized the Doubles competition.
In the Men’s Doubles final, the match was between Damien Ricourt and Ugo Lemoine against and Alex Schvartz and Maxime Serrand.
The first set went to a tiebreak, in which Alex/Maxime were in the lead with 5-1 before going down with 8-6 in the end. After winning an early service break in the second set, Damien and Ugo didn’t allow their opponents back into the match winning 7-6 6-4.
“The spectators, among them most other participants in the tournament, enjoyed a high level of play in a very close contest,” said Swart.
After the match, it was time for the prize-giving. Besides the traditional trophies for the winners and the runners-up, there were also two medals for the ‘Best First Performance’: they went to the team of Michelle van der Werff and Meike Broenink, both of whom have only recently started playing tennis, and to the couple Debby and Roeland Zwanikken; with Debby also playing her first tournament.
President of the Sint Maarten Tennis Club thanked Pierre Ferland ‘for his support as the tournament sponsor’, and Alex Schvartz ‘for his excellent organization of the tournament’.
