Caribbean Foiling Championship set for Dec. 9-11 in Orient Bay

Caribbean Foiling Championship set for Dec. 9-11 in Orient Bay

ORIENT BAY--Registration is now open for the third edition of the Caribbean Foiling Championships set for December 9-11. St Martin will once again be the venue for foiling athletes all across the world. Crystal clear waters, steady trade winds and sunny weather will be the ingredients for excellent racing conditions.
Last year, with 45 competitors and the trade winds on full blast, Orient Bay was the scene of many exciting moments on the water. New records were set in the challenging conditions and friendships were made as competitors across the world connected. As travel restrictions are being lifted and life turns back to normal the organisation is confident that this year the event will take place on full throttle.
“It’s a weekend for adventure seekers and professionals, guaranteed to be full of smiles, camaraderie and sore muscles,” remarked event organiser Maxim van den Pol.
As the addition of the new discipline (Wing Foiling) was considered a major success, the 2022 Caribbean Foiling Championships has officially included Wing Foiling in their standard format.  The event will have a total of three disciplines: Wing, Wind and Kite Foil which will all feature Professional and Leisure classes.
The event will feature three days of racing, of which two days will consist of fast pace course racing and one day dedicated to the long-distance race, better known as the “Around the Island Race”.
The “Around the island race” is the most anticipated race among competitors. In this 26 nautical mile circumnavigation, competitors will sail around the island of St. Maarten/St. Martin, passing through Dutch and French waters in pursuit of the fastest time. Last year the record was broken by local rider Julien Quentel setting a new time of 1hour 12m 17s, shaving over 15 minutes off the previous record.
After receiving many positive reactions about the long-distance race for the Wing Foil discipline, the organisation has promised to organise at least one long distance race per class. Just like last year the Wing Foilers will not go fully around the island but instead sail a downwinder to Long Bay.
“Amazing, incredible, epic!” were some of the reactions from Wing Foilers Sammy Martin, Travis McGarry, and Jan Endersly after arriving in Long Bay and comparing their Strava courses.
Details about the courses, qualification rules and the safety protocol will be shared in the run up to the event. To celebrate opening of registration, early birds who register before October 31 will receive a 10% discount on their registration fee. Register here: www.caribbeanfoiling.com/register
