MARIGOT—The 2nd annual Albert Rousseau Run/Bike off-road Duathlon organised by SXM Sport Evasion in French Quarter on Sunday produced plenty of excitement for spectators, particularly in the Seniors/Elites category.
The largest category of the day saw a large contingent from SXtreme Runners taking part, but unusually for SXM Tri Academie, one of the most competitive clubs, only top triathlete Gregoire Pigeon, was on the start line.
From the outset all eyes were on the two evenly-matched rising star teenagers, Andy Guibreteau and Wilson Sanon who were resuming their rivalry. This category called for two run laps followed by eight laps of the bike course, and finished with one more run lap.
Guibreteau and Sanon stuck to each other like glue, often trading positions, but never dropping far behind each other’s rear wheel. Greg Pigeon was always there in close contention.
A lightning transition at the end of the bike segment, saw both teenagers take off together for the last run lap, however Sanon succumbed to stomach cramps and was forced to slow up leaving Guibreteau to finish first. Sanon still secured second place and Pigeon finished in third place.
Mark Maidwell was first in the 50 Plus category and Steve Catalan took first place in the 40 plus category. The Pupilles category was won by Cornelius Loyan with 8-year-old Samuel Ricour second. The women’s category saw SXtreme runner Agnes Farin take first place with Annee Blaum in second.
The event was made possible by TCE, Intellinet, C&S Snack, Le Cottage, Napa Auto Parts, Bistro Caraibes, La Maison Creole, Chez Coco, Tri Sport, Triple Entertainment, Collectivite, Sandy’s Creole Cuisine, Fantastic Hotel, Residence Blue Beach, La Gaterie SXM and Domino’s Pizza.
