SIMPSON BAY—Avid runners can look forward to the Lagoon Half Marathon or a 10K Run organized by the St. Maarten Road Runners Club this coming Sunday, May 6, at Porto Cupecoy.
The half marathon distance is 21K but those not up to that distance can opt for the 10K. Both starts will be outside the entrance of Porto Cupecoy, 6:30am for the half marathon and at 7:00am for the 10K.
Both groups will first start in reverse by running back into Cupecoy to complete a loop, turning left at the Starz Casino, running past the AUC University, then left again to exit at the Rainbow building before heading back to Porto Cupecoy and the uphill section to go over the border onto the French side.
The clockwise route follows the main road past Lowlands, Baie Nettle, Sandy Ground, Marigot, Bellevue, over the Causeway Bridge onto the airport road and back to Porto Cupecoy and the finish. The 10K route is the same but there will be a turn-around point where runners will head back to Porto Cupecoy for a downhill finish.
Saturday is the last day for registration at Tri Sport in Simpson Bay until 5:00pm. Entry fee is $US 10 per person which includes breakfast at Rendezvous Lounge in Porto Cupecoy. AUC students will be manning water stops along the course.
Refreshments are being sponsored by CC1, Presidente, Dasani Water and Powerade.
Roadrunners President Frits Bus disclosed the Roadrunners is urgently looking for motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join the board and help get sporting activities back on track.
“At the moment we are lacking a proper board,” he said. “What we have is a temporary board, with Susy Maidwell-Piscione as Treasurer and Mary Wrigley as Secretary. We are hoping to have a new board to revive activities. The hurricanes have not helped either. So far, we have only organized the Around the Island Relay race and the Fatum Race in the past year. But normally we are organizing seven or eight events a year. We want to attract new blood onto the board.”
