ST. THOMASS--Team Island Water World of St. Maarten battled winds over 30 knots in their red, white and blue Melges 24 to take third place in the on the weekend.
“The little Melges suffered upwind in the big seas,” reported skipper Frits Bus. “But once the spinnaker was we charged down the course.”
Spookie, the TP 52, from the US was overall winner.
“Many boats suffered damages and many retired due to the high winds and heavy seas,” said Bus.
Team Island water World also finished third in the warm up regatta.
“ It was an around the Island off St. John race and attracted only the top racing boats to tune up for Saturday's main event,” said Bus.
Spooky not only won the warm up but set the course record. El Ocaso, a regular at the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta was second, while another regular of the Heineken Regatta, Bernie Wong's "Taz" from Antigua finished just behind Team IWW.
