BASSETERRE, St. Kitts--Keacy Carty from St. Maarten recorded his maiden first-class century with a fighting 103 against the Windward Islands Volcanoes in the West Indies Cricket Board four-day tournament at Warner Park Stadium in St. Kitts.
The 20-year-old stroked nine fours and two sixes in an inning that displayed determination and grit. Carty's superb century came in the second inning after the Windward Islands enforced the follow-on with the Leeward Islands Hurricanes falling short by 300 runs.
Carty started the fourth and final day of the match on 16 runs and his team still 195 in arrears. He shared valuable partnership with Jahmar Hamilton who made 60 and Nkummer Bonnor who contributed 55.
Along with the century, Carty compiled 35 off 61 balls (4x4) in the first inning to signal a resounding return to form.
Batting a second time, the Hurricanes reached 351 all out. The Volcanoes were asked to score 52 runs to win the match. They overhauled the total with seven wickets to spare.
President of Cricket St. Maarten, Dwayne Elgin was high in praise for the feat performed by the youngster. He sent a congratulatory note that read, "Congratulations for a well-deserved century. You continue to persevere despite the challenging circumstances. All of St. Maarten is of you and your achievement."
Another highlight of the match was Sunil Ambris record 231 off 256 balls that included 27 fours and five sixes. He joined Shai Hope as the only players in the Double Century Club after eight rounds of matches. Hope stroked 215 against the Guyana Jaguars on last Friday.
In other matches, tournament leaders and defending champion Guyana Jaguars had to fight tooth and nail to stave off the Barbados Pride. Set 93 to win in 12 overs, the Pride reached 75 for five at the end of the match. The scores in that match were the Pride 480 for three declared; the Jaguars, 250 and 322.
Jamaica Scorpions defeated Trinidad and Tobago Red Force by 87 runs. The scores for the Scorpions were 201 and 201 while the Red Force made 174 and 141.
The ninth round of matches brings together Windward Islands against Jamaica and Barbados take on Trinidad and Tobago. Both matches begin on April 7 in Kingstown and Bridgetown respectively.
The Leeward Islands' next match is against Trinidad and Tobago in St. Kitts from April 15.
