Dark skies, rain and a different class hamper Team Island Water World

ST. THOMAS--Team Island water World from St. Maarten competed in the St. Thomas Regatta over the weekend.

“It was very unusual Caribbean weather,” said Water World skipper Frits Bus.  “The annual St. Thomas regatta, known as STIR, was sailed under dark skies, with rainy weather and south to south-west winds.”
Team Island Water World raced in the largest class, the IC-24 one design.
“We just missed a podium finish by finishing in fourth, “said Bus.  Frajito Lugar from Puerto Rico won the first day.
After the second day of racing Team Island Water World had moved up in the standings to third place.
“Day two was a series of short tactical races,” said Bus.   He was pleased with the crew’s performance as they placed behind two boats from Puerto Rican that regularly sail in the IC-24s.
“Team Island Water World normally sails in the other one-design class, the Melges 24.”
On the final day of sailing a pro-crewed boat from Newport won the day. The races were longer and the Newport crew had better boat speed.
Team Island Water World will next represent the Friendly island at the BVI Spring Regatta and later at “La Voile “in St. Barths.
