MARIGOT--On Sunday, October 1, Avenir Sportif Club de Saint-Martin (ASCSM) organised the 22nd edition of its Back to School Run (Foulées de la Rentrée).
With 101 runners and 65 walkers registered for the 5km course in Marigot, and some 30 youngsters on the 2km course from Galisbay car park to the Fort Louis Marina jetty, the event marked the start of the running season for many. Cécilia Mobuchon, who was visiting the island after winning the French half-marathon title in Montbéliard last week, unsurprisingly took the lead, completing the course in 18:16, followed in the men's race by Gouin Jeannot in 18:42. Of particular note was the performance of young ASCSM athlete Désirée Gamiette, who finished 2nd in her category in 22:43. On the 2k course, the youngest athletes also performed well, posting results that bode well for the coming season.
This year, the ASCSM was keen to take part in Pink October, the month dedicated to breast cancer screening, by donating the funds raised for the walk to the Oncology Department of the Louis-Constant Fleming hospital. At the race village, volunteers from the Saint-Martin Santé association provided information on cancer screening. The club expressed its appreciation to all the volunteers who helped out with safety and refreshments on the course, as well as the runners who, year after year show their loyalty to the club by taking part.
