St. Maarten baseball turns pro

POND ISLAND--The St. Maarten National Baseball Association is changing gears in an effort to improve regional and international participation in the game.


  The SMNBA has signed a memorandum of understanding with Baseball International Schools to open and operate SXM Baseball Academy on the Friendly Islands.
  Tony Rombley, from BIS, will serve as the technical director and be responsible for the training of selection teams using professional coaches.
  In the past the training was handled by an all-volunteer staff that had regular jobs and had to
  “This is a new approach for the Island,” said Rombley. “SMNBA and BIS want to cooperate with all stakeholders involved in Baseball on the island.”
  Rombley was born on Aruba, and has been a youth trainer both in the Caribbean and Netherlands since 1978 and played in both regions including a stint on the Dutch National Team.
 He started BIS on Aruba in 2008.  He managed the Aruba national Teams from 2008 to 2010 and in 2009 was the manager of the Kingdom Games 15-17 team that won the championship.
