MARIGOT—Water skier Thomas Witczak was named Athlete of the Year at the Collectivité’s third edition of the St. Martin Sports Awards held Friday evening in the Sandy Ground Cultural Center.
Witczack’s amazing resume at just 13 years old includes titles as Europe’s top ranking water skier, French Slalom Champion in 2015 and Vice-Champion in figures, jumps and combined disciplines in 2014 and 2015.
He joined numerous other athletes from St. Martin who were honoured during the evening in 16 different sports. Also honoured were the coaches and technical teams behind the success of the athletes.
The evening was opened by Sports Commissioner Alain Gros-Desormeaux who was assisted in presenting the awards by Préfète Anne Laubies, Vice- President Wendel Cocks, St. Martin Tourism Office President Jeanne Rogers- Vanterpool and Semsamar Director General Marie-Paule Belenus Romana.
The awards were announced by Priscilla Bade and Charles Henri Palvair.
The following athletes were winners in their chosen sports; Sareena Carti (Athletics); Louis Fernandes (Basketball); Joseph Carty (Bodybuilding); Adelio Brooks (cycling); Cindy George (cricket); Pierre Garcia (Golf); Afiya Denis (Gymnastics); Andy Boisseron (Judo); Natal Tasso (Karate-Kick Boxing); Nathalie Registre (Rounders); Amory Meynet (Rugby); Maud Le Car (Surfing); Wissem Khalfaoui (Tennis); Bedelyla Hunt (Volleyball); and Julien Quentel (Windsurfing).
Harold Urbino was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for his engagement in sports in the 1980s.
