Court and Prosecutor start digital criminal proceedings

PHILIPSBURG--The Joint Court of Justice and the Prosecutor’s Office made a start with the digitalisation of criminal proceedings on Monday. From now on, incoming files will be scanned and processed digitally.

The decision to digitalise is a result of the experience following Hurricane Irma in September 2017, when it became evident that it is risky working with printed documents.

Digitalisation will contribute to better control of processes and make these simpler, efficient and faster, the Prosecutor’s Office said Monday in a statement.

A joint session with Court staff and the Prosecutor’s Office was held Monday during which details of the filing structure and the workings of the “digital mailbox” were explained.

Digitalising of criminal proceedings in St. Maarten is the first step towards complete digitalisation, said the Prosecutor’s Office.

The Prosecutor’s Office and the Court intend to exchange digital information with other partners, including legal professionals, in the future, it was stated.
