Government to help USM

PHILIPSBURG--The government of St. Maarten is currently providing assistance to University of St. Martin (USM), which is experiencing financial challenges.

In responding to a question during the Council of Ministers’ weekly press briefing on Wednesday, Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs (ECYS) Wycliffe Smith told reporters that he and the Council of Ministers are “very much aware” of the financial challenges being experienced by the institution.

He said authorities have had discussions with the USM board and “I can safely tell you that the Council of Ministers has decided to assist the university to help them through the financial difficulties.”

Smith did not specify what form of assistance is being provided to USM and, if the assistance is financial, what amount is being provided and for what duration.
