PFP’s #8 candidate, Luciano Nicholls, addresses the Belvedere community as party leader Melissa Gumbs and fellow PFP candidates look on during the second PFP town hall meeting at Belvedere Community Centre on December 5.
PHILIPSBURG--Party for Progress (PFP) kicked off a series of town hall meetings last week with meetings in South Reward and Belvedere.
Each community was invited to personally meet candidates and learn about the party’s manifesto, which was published on Nomination Day under the title “Five for the Future: Transforming a Nation in Recovery” and aims to improve the quality of life for all in St. Maarten, it was stated in a press release.
South Reward and Ebenezer were invited to St. Dominic High School on Tuesday, December 3, where party leader Melissa Gumbs was joined by fellow PFP candidates Charlon Pompier, Patrice Gumbs, Raeyhon Peterson, Marvio Cooks, Michnella Eugenio, Michael James and Luciano Nicholls.
Those in attendance questioned the party’s plans for healthcare and tourism, with candidates outlining the manifesto points of passing the Healthcare Professionals Act BIG legislation for the registration of medical professionals and the finalisation of an actual tourism authority for the country.
The evening ended in discussing how St. Maarten can move away from the old style of politics and make way for honest, smart and respectful representation, something PFP has already begun to do with its approach to campaigning and meeting the community, the release said.
At Belvedere Community Centre on Thursday, December 5, the party met with the Belvedere community, who shared their concerns regarding housing and the state of the road through Dutch Quarter, which has been in a deteriorated state since the stalling of the sewage project. PFP expressed its plans to focus on improving infrastructure through policies such as the road fund and required drainage policies with building permit requests.
The next PFP town hall meetings are scheduled for Middle Region/Defiance – at D’Region Bar across from Samuel Grocery, on December 9; Cole Bay/Cay Bay – at Peterson Plaza, on December 11; Pointe Blanche – at Lazy Lizard, on December 17; Hope Estate/Guana Bay – at Senior Citizens’ Recreational Centre on December 19; Cay Hill/Belair – at Fleming’s Café, on December 20; St. Peters – at Rupert Maynard Community Centre, on January 4; Sucker Garden – at TJ’s Cassava Coal Pot, on January 5; Simpson Bay – at Simpson Bay Community Centre, on January 6; and Dutch Quarter – at the Dutch Quarter Community Centre, on January 7.
