ST. EUSTATIUS--Persons in the community came together this week to paint the homes of several senior citizens, ranging in age from their early 70s to mid-90s. The group said it was their goal to liven up the homes of these seniors to bring smiles to their faces in the Christmas season.
The collaborative effort was organized by Paint Statia Beautiful, Reconstruction Programme St. Eustatius 2017-2019, Statia Pride Foundation, Statia Doet Team of the Labour Department, St. Eustatius Softball Association SESBA and various sports teams.
The homes of Alecia “Vi” Robins (82), Louise van Putten (84) and Gloria “Mamie” Gibbs (94) were among those that received a fresh coat of paint.
Gibbs was one of the top seamstresses in Statia. Van Putten was a foster mother to many children. She was also part of the Women’s League and Girl’s Brigade. She worked at the Post Office, was a financial liaison for Windward Islands Bank and Island Finance and held many other functions.
Robins found the love of her life on Anguilla, where she has resided for more than 50 years. She is known for her agriculture prowess, as well as being an avid fan of the Thunderz softball team.
The volunteers worked long hours over several days until the paint jobs were completed.
