PHILIPSBURG--A woman whose vehicle was seized by the St. Maarten Asset Recovery Team on August 15 has given up the rights to her vehicle to avoid prosecution.
The vehicle was seized in Anna's Hope Estate in Belvedere as part of an investigation named “Pen.”
The Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release on Friday that the suspect, identified as J.E.A.F., had been offered “a transaction” by the Prosecutor's Office of St. Maarten which she accepted.
“The transaction means that the suspect waives the right to the seized vehicle and that the suspect will not be prosecuted for money-laundering. The car will now be sold and the proceeds will benefit the country St. Maarten. In doing so, criminal proceeds have been recovered without a time-consuming criminal investigation,” it was stated in the release.
The St. Maarten Asset Recovery Team is a collaboration of the St. Maarten Police Force, the St. Maarten Tax Authority, Customs, the Coast Guard and the St. Maarten Prosecutor's Office.
