Woman stabbed trying to get back cell phone from robber

PHILIPSBURG--A woman was stabbed in the vicinity of Beach Plaza Casino in Philipsburg around 12:00am Tuesday after she chased down a man J.R. who had stolen her mobile phone. Police arrested R. shortly after the incident.

The police dispatch centre received a call just after 12:00am Tuesday for a stabbing that had taken place by the traffic lights on W.J.A. Nisbeth Road (Pondfill).

Several police patrols responded to the call and encountered a bloodied woman at the scene who told officers that she had gotten into a scuffle with a man who stole her mobile phone when she was inside Beach Plaza Casino.

The woman said the man had suddenly grabbed her phone and run off with it. She then chased the man in an attempt to get back her property.

She was more fleet-footed than the robber and quickly caught up to him. However, when she did, it turned into a physical altercation. The man then pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the hand. He fled the scene after stabbing her.

However, R. did not manage to flee very far, and police arrested him shortly afterwards. He was taken to the Philipsburg police station where he is being held for questioning.

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene, and she was later transported to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further care. Her injuries are non-life-threatening.
