BE LAIR --For the second year in a row the doubles team of MJ Every and Dimitri Celestina, from Curacao won the Second Annual International Padel Tennis Open, organized by the SXM Padel Club. Olivier Camou and Robin Rousseaux from St. Martin won the Intermediate Category and the Ladies Group was won by Lauriane Ramus and Melanie Delannoy from St. Martin and Guadeloupe. “Special mention goes out to Lucia Camou,” said tournament organizer Ricardo Perez.
“She is one of the young players rising from the SXM Padel “Future Champs Program.” Camou is just 10 years old. Matches Started on Thursday, with a total of 45 doubles teams signed up to play. The competition was divided into three categories, Men’s Advance, Intermediate and Ladies. Each team played a minimum of 2 elimination matches. “Players travelled from Puerto Rico, Colombia, Curacao, Martinique and Guadeloupe,” said Perez. “Making this a true Sports Tourism event during the very slow tourism time of the year.” Perez continued to say the local players in true St. Maarten fashion had Nationalities of Argentinian, Cuban, Belgian, Colombian, French, Italian, Curacao, Moldova, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Venezuelan, Puerto Rico and the Americans. Up coming Padel events include several clinics in August by Sandy Farquharson founder of The Padel School.
He will also help promote the island as a Caribbean Padel Destination. He is a major influencer in the sport of Padel. In December SXM Padel will host a the final stop of the International Senior Padel Tournament of the Americas. This will be the second year in a row St. Maarten has hosted the final stop. More that 100 players are expected to visit.
