COLE BAY--Bhardwaj ‘Bharo’ Raghubir is the new President of Cricket St. Maarten. He replaced Dwayne Elgin at the helm at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday night. Raghubir received overwhelming support from the captains/managers of the cricket team to rise to the top position.

He leads a board filled with many new faces. In the executive, only Dian Nisbett retained her position as secretary. The new Vice-President is Fitzroy Melius, and the new Treasurer is Charissa Gumbs. Three new committee members were also selected. They are Hemraj ‘Ford’ Nandoo, Akeem Charles, and Colin Hamer. The new board has a few immediate challenges. Those are balancing its income and expenses, reactivating local cricket tournaments, and sustaining its development programmes. In an invited comment, Raghubir, who was a former national cricketer, was asked what prompted him to join the cricket administration at his time. “Whilst I have played cricket for many years, I have stayed away from the administrative side of the game, but as we transition with time, I think it’s an opportune time to make my contribution from this unappreciated but important side of the game. Additionally, I was heavily influenced by the many calls that I would have received of late from concerned cricket persons,” revealed Raghubir. Asked to outline his plans and projections for this two-year term, the Chief Underwriting Officer at NAGICO Insurances responded, “We haven’t had a chance to meet as a new board. Only after meeting with the new board members will we be able to come up with definitive plans and projections for now and the immediate future.

However, recognizing that most people simply want to see competitive cricket coming back to the field, our intention is to target September 2023 as a possible start date for a new tournament. Our plans to move Cricket SXM forward inclusive of the development and nurturing of our talented players, will be shared with the cricket fraternity at large.” Former President Elgin, who served four years as President of Cricket St. Maarten, expressed thanks to the immediate past board members for their outstanding efforts in keeping cricket alive with limited resources. Elgin also wished Raghubir and his team much success and encouraged all to support the new board.
