MULLET BAY--Over 90 participants took part in Sunday’s Powerade Aquathlon, in ideal, cool overcast conditions, and an unusually flat sea, a sign that the winter season has begun. There was a choice of an Individual 5K or 10K run and a team event but everybody started with the 1,000 metre swim.
This year the swim was preceded by everyone doing the can-can dance to music, a fun start straight into the water “to get everyone to relax and not to take themselves too seriously, and get into the right mood” said Friendly Island Triathlon Association (FITA) board member Susy Piscione. A different theme is chosen every year for the start. The event was formerly called the “Splash and Dash” years ago.
The 10K race was won once again by Gregory Pigeon (1:00.09), albeit with a slightly slower time that last year. Second place went to Maxime Kruszewska in 1:06: 27 and third place to Axel Leduq in 1:11:22.
Boris Villemin won 5K race in 40:44, with Erwan Gentil second in 41:56, and third Vincent Accattato in 45:27. Boris also had the fastest swim of the day, first out of the water, in 16:48. The fastest runners were Greg Pigeon for the 10K (41:18) and Wilmer Azcarate in the 5K (22:20)
The 10K team event was won by Nahoc Chloe and Arthur in 1:06:11, second place went to Rashad & Lorena in 1:19:04, and third place to SXM Speed Sevastien and Felix in 1:19:49.
As expected there was a bigger participation for the 5K team race which was won by MD Damante and Mozard in 39:20, second place went to St. Quentin and Steve in 39:41 and third place to Power Adaya and Andreescio in 40:02.
Mary Wrigley, ninth overall, was the fastest female in the 5K with a time of 59:0 while Melina Bruneau was first female to finish the 10K in 1:18:23
Of note, the oldest and youngest participant in the 5K mixed team event were “Happy Finishers”, Jan van den Eynde (70) with his granddaughter Louisa (7). Jan did the swim and Louisa the run.
The Powerade Aquathlon was sponsored by CC1 and Powerade along with Vezna Taverna, Tri-Sport, Tous a L’O and YC Events. Complete results are on the Tri Sport website
