PHILIPSBURG--The 36th edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta started with the need for foul weather gear. That is sailor speak for rain coats or in the absence of such umbrellas and trash bags and of course duct tape.
The regatta looked destined for trouble as early morning squalls moved through the area. At the bridge opening sailboats of all sizes raced for the narrow passage, causing some confusion and at least one boat brushed up against the bridge abutment.
By race time the clouds had started to thin. Wind was down to 25 knots and 193 boats headed around the island course of approximately 26 miles.
Two new records were established. Phaedo3, green trimaran, flew around the Friendly Island in 1 hour 19 minutes 59 seconds in the multi hull division and in the mono hull group Highland Fling XI circled the island in 2 hours 12 minutes 32 seconds.
Last year Phaedo3, a MOD 70 (Multi One Design 70-foot long 55-feet wide) circumnavigated the island in 1 hour 30 minutes.
Steve Fosset set the record on his 125-foot catamaran PlayStation back in March of 2003 at 2 hours 4 minutes 23 seconds.Melges 24
“Super race day,” said Island Water World skipper Frits bus. “Conditions were near perfect. The course was great. We got a great start and by the end of the day the weather had improved.”
