COLE BAY--Three Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athletes earned their blue belts from the SXM BJJ, Renzo Gracie St Maarten school.
Michel Sean Peterson, Ernesto Acosta and Jean-Oneli (Nelly) Blaise received blue belts from Professor Melissa Bardfield, Sensei Akeem Lewis and Coach Jami Eloi. The Blue belt is the first progression after white and signifies an immense amount of hard work and dedication, explained Bardfield. Nelly Blaise commented: “Achieving my blue belt in Jiu-Jitsu is an enormous milestone, and I'm overflowing with pride. It's a mix of daunting and fulfilling feelings. On one hand, I believe I'm prepared for this new chapter, but on the other, I'm fully aware there's still much more to learn and improve. I'm absolutely up for the challenge to continue this journey of growth. I want to express my deepest gratitude to my incredible senseis for their unwavering guidance and support throughout this journey.” Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is founded on the concept of using leverage and technique so that a smaller weaker person can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger heavier opponent- most notably by taking the fight to the ground and applying joint locks and choke holds to defeat an opponent. SXM BJJ prioritizes development beyond physical techniques. SXM BJJ nurtures an environment where students practice discipline, respect, resilience and fosters personal growth both on and off the mat. Professor Melissa Bardfield sees martial arts training as a vehicle for developing human potential. SXM BJJ welcomes individuals of all ages and skill levels to join their martial arts community.
