Volleyball season opens with beach and senior games

PHILIPSBURG—The brother and sister team of Chesley and Allinton Augustine won the beach volleyball competition at the opening of the Walter Plantz Square Saturday. The pair won all their matches. The competition coincided with the opening of the St. Maarten Volleyball Association’s 2015 Senior Competition season.
The day started with a beach volleyball competition. Seven teams showed up to play in the competiton organized by the Volleyball Association and the St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies.


Saturday night was the opening of the Senior Competition and the Award Ceremony for the 2014 Senior and the 2015 Secondary School Championships. This year 10 teams will be contesting the championship. There are five female and five male senior teams.
At the first game the defending female champs Go For It gave the new female team Sparta, the youngest team in this year tournament, an introduction to the big leagues, Go For It won 3-0: 25-7; 25-11; 25-11.
In the second game the 6 time male defending champs Reptiles took on the revamped Guess What . Reptiles missing their setter David Williams were upset 3-1 with scores of 25-20; 19-25; 25-17;25-21.

2014 Champions
Trophies were presented to the 2014 winners. Go for It topped the female division and was followed by Shush and Bush Tea Reload.
Reptiles went home with the male division trophy. United Volleyball Club was second and third place went to Guess What?
Valerie Damaseau of Go For It was named Most Valuable Player for the women and Paul Quellery of Reptiles was the MVP for the men..

2015 School Championship
Academy dominted the Secondary School Competition winning both the male and dfemale divisions, PSVE was second in both divisions and third in the female group went to Sundail and Learning Unlimited in the male group.
Tivona Trottman and Juwon Hans both from St. Maarten Academy were named tournament MVPs.

Game nights are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday starting at 7:30pm each evening.
